What does an Organic Vegetable Farm Manager do?

Organic Vegetable Farm Managers grow and harvest crops using sustainable practices. In this apprenticeship, you’ll learn how to:

  • Plan and manage planting schedules
  • Grow and care for organic vegetables
  • Harvest and prepare crops for market
  • Operate farm equipment and tools
  • Market and sell your produce
  • Understand organic certification and food safety

What are the qualifications?

To start your Organic Vegetable Farm Manager Apprenticeship, you’ll need:

  • A high school diploma or GED®

  • Physical ability to perform farm tasks

  • To apply directly to a participating farm or employer

Note: Entry requirements may vary by employer.

How long is the program?

This apprenticeship takes place over 2 growing seasons and includes:

  • 144 hours of paid related instruction

  • On-the-job training with an experienced mentor

  • Additional training as needed

How do I get started?

Step 1: Get Hired – Find a job with an organic farm that can support your hands-on training.
Step 2: Get Sponsored – Your employer will contact the DWD – Bureau of Apprenticeship Standards to set up your apprenticeship contract.

Once your contract is in place, you’ll be on your way to a rewarding, hands-on career in organic farming.

Online

Classes wherever you have an internet connection. 

  • An in-person career experience, such as an internship, practicum, or credit for prior learning, may be required.
  • Some online courses may be held at specific dates/times.
Day
Classes between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.
Evening
Classes between the hours of 5:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.
Weekend
A combination of online classes and Saturday and/or Sunday classes.
Full-time
12 or more credits per term.
Part-time
Fewer than 12 credits per term.
