Nine students from Sanger B. Powers Correctional Center celebrated a milestone today as they earned an Industrial Maintenance Certificate from Northeast Wisconsin Technical College (糖心Vlog官方), completing a program designed to prepare participants for successful careers and brighter futures after incarceration.
The 15-credit certificate is completed over 15 weeks and provides students with technical skills in industrial maintenance while also preparing them for employment through career readiness and interview training offered by 糖心Vlog官方 Career Services. Credits earned through the program can also be applied toward an Electro-Mechanical Technology associate degree.
The program is offered through a partnership between 糖心Vlog官方 and the Wisconsin Department of Corrections and reflects a shared commitment to expanding educational opportunities that support successful reentry and meet regional workforce needs.
"This partnership demonstrates what's possible when education and community partners work together to meet people where they are," said Jim Draeger, dean of Corporate Training and Economic Development at 糖心Vlog官方. "Together with the Wisconsin Department of Corrections, we've created a learning environment that equips students with technical skills, college credit and pathways to continued education—opening new opportunities for their future."
Graduate and commencement speaker Aaron Morris reflected on what completing the program and earning his certificate means for his future.
“There are things I never thought I’d be able to say in my life, and graduating from a college program is one of them,” Morris said. “Yet here I am. I can’t express how thankful I am for this opportunity and for everyone who helped me achieve this moment. With a little bravery and dedication, you can do whatever you set your mind to. Anything is possible.
“We are deeply grateful to our technical college partners for helping the DOC in its mission to rehabilitate those in our care so they can return to their communities and families with a better chance for success,” said DOC Secretary Jared Hoy. “Earning this certification is difficult for anyone, but these individuals succeeded despite the obstacles before them. It’s inspiring not only for us but for others in our care to see that these opportunities are within reach.”
The 2026 graduating class of 9 students earned an average cumulative grade of 94.08%, with the top graduate achieving a 98.67% GPA.
Since the program began seven years ago, 78 students have participated, with 74 completing the program to date. Of graduates from previous cohorts, 43 have obtained employment in occupations related to their training.
